Gabriel Barkay, PhD
Professor of Biblical Archaeology

Gabriel Barkay was born in Hungary in 1944 and immigrated to Israel in 1950. He received his BA summa cum laude from the Hebrew University for his studies in archaeology, comparative religion and biblical geography. In 1985, he received his PhD summa cum laud from the Tel Aviv University in the field of archaeology. Barkay has been digging extensively all over in Israel as well as in Iran. His main field of interest is archaeology of Jerusalem and biblical archaeology. The world famous discovery of the earliest biblical verses was made by Barkay: The priestly benediction (Num 6: 23-26) written on the silver scroll hidden in a burial cave next to the Scottish Church in Jerusalem. Since 1979, successive publications by Barkay inform about the discovery, including his contribution about reclaiming the earliest biblical texts and their contexts by means of advanced technologies in ASOR 66:4 (2003). In 1996 he was honored with a Laureate of the Jerusalem Prize for Archaeology.
