Gerald Steinberg heads the Political Studies Department at Bar Ilan University, is the founder of the Program on Conflict Management and Negotiation, and is the Executive Director of NGO Monitor.  He specializes in international relations, diplomacy, “soft power”, and the politics of human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs), particularly in the Middle East. He completed BS and MS degrees in physics at the University of California, and applied this scientific foundation to the analysis of international relations and political power in different forms, receiving his doctorate from Cornell University in 1981. Steinberg is a consultant to the Israeli government, works with a number of international organizations (NATO, UN University, OSCE, SIPRI), and is a columnist for the Jerusalem Post. His articles also appear in the Wall Street Journal, the International Herald Tribune, and other newspapers. He is a frequent commentator for the BBC, NPR, and CBC.  Recent publications include Soft Powers Play Hardball: NGOs Wage War against Israel; Europe’s Hidden Hand: EU Funding for Political NGOs in the Arab-Israeli Conflict (NGO Monitor Monograph Series, 2008); Lessons from the Middle East; Europe’s Failed Middle East Policies; and Deterrence Instability: Hizballah's Fuse to Iran's Bomb.
